The weather, which was simply glorious for the first day of the New Zealand golf championship, was a curious mixture to-day. In the early morning it was fine, but a couple of hours after play in the third I round of the open championship started [ a storm came up from north-west, a heavy shower falling, after which the wind chopped round to the south and ' was very gusty. This interfered with some of the players considerably, though J. C. Johnston got round with 79, and the redoubtable Duncan with 80. Johnston's score put him in fourth position, i Stewart, of Uisborne, who was level witb Duncan yesterday, finished with 83, the champion thus gaining three on him, while Clements got round with 81. Burns, of Auckland, got round with nn 80, but Fred Hood did badly. Though his driving was wonderfully good he went to pieces on the greens. Arthur Duncan, with three up on the next man, Stewart, looked to have a mortgage on the championship when the : final round started, and as he got round with 81, making his aggregate 319, he duly retained the honour, though Johnston finished with 77. only three behind the amateur crack. Johnston played in first-class form to-day, gaining live on the champion in the two rounds. In the. final he went out in 36, and coming home did 41 after a seven at tho thirteenth hole. At Long Tom, 518 yds, he did four. ■Clements played very consistently to-day, doing 81 in the morning and 80 in the final, or an aggregate of 324, which gave him third place, two ahead of Fred Hood, who had a bad run is the morning, and thus lost his chance in the. final, in which he got round with 81. His driving and approaches were splendid and his putting wonderful, one in particular being a dandy. He had very bad luck though, and lost six strokes which he should have got. Burns showed consistency, but a seven at the ninth hole and two sixes spoilt what would have been a good round. He finished with 85, or an aggregate of 335. The champion had a couple of rather peculiar experiences in the final round. At the third tee he foozled his drive, the ball going thirty yards, but he recovered with a perfect cleek shot and holed in five. Then when playing to Long Tom hole. 548 yds, he had a curious mis hap with hi* third stroke. He was lying clear and took his cleek, but the bail, striking a root in front, went up in the air, falling on his shoulder, and thus he incurred a penalty, losing two strokes. q. yesterday's form Stewart, the (lisdark horse, was fancied by many as the most likely to beat Duncan, but, following on bis disappointing score of 83 this morning, he took 85 in the final, and thus finished level with Fred Hood in the aggregate. Duncan's victory today makes the third time he has won the open championship out of four tournaments at which he has competed. He has also won the amateur championship seven times. D. HacCormack played below form today, and bad no luck.
