OHINEMURI RIVER SILTING.
£ 100,000 BORROWED FOR PROTECTIVE WORK. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PAEROA, this day. Word has been received in Paeroa that the improvements to the Ohinemuri and Waihou rivers, as recommended by the late Silting Commission are to be proceeded with at once. Mr H. Poland, M.P., has been informed by the Minister that £ 100,000 has been 'borrowed for that purpose, and placed in the hands of the Treasury. The Minister has obtained authority to expend £23,000 of the borrowed amount, and expects to be able to call tenders for the cutting of the Ngararaki canal in a few weeks. Mr H. R. Young, engineer in charge of the work and stationed at Paeroa, has, with his staff, been very busy during the last few weeks surveying the land that has 'been affected by the flood and silt.
