FIFESHIRE WRECK.
TWO BOATS STILL OUT. WITH THIRTY ON BOARD. SHIP A TOTAL WRECK. ABANDONED ON FRIDAY. NAMES OF THE MISSING. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 8.20 a.m.) LONDON, August 15. The steamer Fifeshire, which went ashore near Cape Gardafui while on the voyage from Australia to London and Liverpool, has now become a total wreck. She is lying amid hard sand and coral in 19ft of water. BUMPED HEAVILY ON A REEF. When she struck she was carried broadside on to a heavy swell, and was bumped heavily against the coral reefs. These soon pounded holes in her sides, and she became flooded, bumping heavily until her bottom was torn out. She stranded on the evening of Wednesday last, and some of the passengers and crew left next day, while others remained aboard until noon on Friday, when the vessel showed signs of breaking up beneath their feet. The remaining boats were accordingly got out and provisioned, and everybody left the ship in them. LAST SEEN OF THE BOATS. Two of the boats effected a safe landing, but two are still missing. These boats are in charge of Chief Officer Woods and Spcond Officer Caulfield, both of whom are skilful navigators. They mav have landed on some inaccessible portion of the coast, or may have been picked up by one of the three vessels searching the vicinity—the British Transport, the Dalhousie, and the Italian cruiser Volturno.
