DEVONPORT ROADS.

At the meeting of the Devonport Borough Council, held last night Ml. A J. Tapper moved, in accordance wxth notice of motion, "That an expert road engineer be appointed by, the Council; to g submit a report on the main.roads m the borough, and the prooable cost 01 kerbing and channelling such roads, and the formation of the same in accordance with the permanent levels. Jar. Tapper said that he felt a great number «f ratepayers were in favour of a loan for -the purpose of forming the streets and making them to the permanent levels. ' He would oppose any loan proposals for street rmprovements, unless they were acting up on the report of an expert man. Mr. Considine, in seconding the mo tion, expressed himself in favour of: obtaining the report of an experienced Tfian.Ss su'ch'ireport would-form-a, good basis of a scheme for permanent road improvements. Mr.' Quartley supported the resolution, but did not consider it necessary to form all streets to the permanent levels. ■ Mr. Gannon, speaking in favour of tne motion, thought the Council should also seriously consider the nature of the material to .he used, it>v permanent works, and to advise the engineer in this respect. He considered asphalte, wood blocks, or tarred macadam should be used on the main roads. As it was desirable to widen some streets 'm places and to cut down others, he thought the Council should put all data possible before the engineer, who was report. Mr Cranch was of opinion that.it was necessary to give an engineer- full in-! structions in connection with the matter, and suggested that a special meeting be held to fully discuss the. subject. He contended that any scheme to be put before the ratepayers must provide for attention to other streets in addition to the main roads. Mr McLean referred to the large amount of detail to be considered, and favoured devoting an evening 'to the matter! _ ~,,.'* -j The Mayor (Mr. Wm. Handley) said that the motion had his support, but | be would like to see all the streets in the borough-receive some consideration and attention, and contended that all work should be done with a view to permanency. Many streets had not had much done to them for some years He realised that the main roads held the premier claim for permanent works, but any scheme formulated should pro- ! vide for giving all the streets in the borough some attention. # Mr. Tapper, in reply, said he favoured all streets approved of by 'the Council receive attention under a scheme for permanent improvements, but some streets did not require as much done to them as others. He believed it was wise to seriously consider the matter .of » permanent scheme now, and when the springtime came round, the Council would be in a position to set about commencing permanent works. _ The motion was earned unanimously and it was resolved to hold a specia meeting next Tuesday to consider de tails in connection with the matter.
