SECRET POLICE DRAMA.
>M. Raskaltoff, Chief of the Secret Toliee at Archangel, has, says Renter's St. Petersburg correspondent, committed suicide. The local newspapers explain the motive of his act as follows: — Not long since M. Kostogoroff. an Arch- J angel •millionaire, received an anonymous I letter informing him in the name of a group of political exiles that if he did not deposit a sum of £00 at a certain place and at a certain time the lace of his only daughter would be watered with vitriol. It was added that it would be vain ou his part to go to the sen-ret police. M. Kostogoroff, on receiving the letter. went to the geudanuery headquarters and the authorities arranged an ambush for the designed rendezvous. M. Kostogoroff, when the time arrived, paced the envelope at the spot indicated. A man with his face more or less concealed walked rapidly towards the cache. Gendarmes seized him and he was somewhat, roughly handled before his identity was discovered. He was the head of the secret police. The gendarmery officer tried to explain away the incident to his men and M. RasI kalton" was not arrested on the spot, but he shot himself before the affair could be officially investigated.
