» WELLINGTON'S REMARKABLE PROPOSAL The needs of the Dominion would be better served, thinks the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, if the inward European mail, via Sydney, were conveyed direct to Wellington, leaving Sydney on the day of its arrival there (Monday), instead of coming to Auckland 'by the boat leaving Sydney every Wednesday. The suggestion does not commend itself to Mr. Leo. Myers, president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, who pointed out that the Auckland line of boats from Sydney had become a national institution, playing an important part in the development of the commercial, industrial, and social life of this country, and it wa3 of particular value in developing the tourist traffic. In the last six months about 10,000 people had been carried on the SydneyAuckland run. The Auckland Chamber of Commerce was moving in the direction of a fast service between the two ports, to shorten the journey to three days. If it were found to the national advantage to have a fast steamer doing the quick run on alternate weeks between Sydney and Auckland and Sydney and Wellington, the people of Auckland would be glad to help the proposal along, but they had no intention of surrendering their established rights. The alternate fast run suggested-was, of course, [ not intended to interfere with the exist-1 ing weekly services between the two cities and the Commonwealth. i
