Mr. T. narle Giles; Conciliation Commissioner presided, 'ihe assessors for. the employers- were: Messrs. _. Prior, J. A. \V. slessenger, and _*. Whitehead, and for the union: Messrs, E. J. Carey,. A. Jackson, and B. Martin. The representative for the union was Mr. T. Long, and for the restaurant employers, Mr. C. Grosvenor. Fifty proprietors were cited. —he- Commissioner said the Council had to consider, a. new application for a_ award to supersede the one ma,de in July, 1909: The claims made by the union were practically for a difference in the condiuon, and increases of wages paid. Mr. Grosvenor said he was pleased to be in a different position from the one he had occupied yesterday, in that he was ■empowered to try and agree to: an award suitable to both sides. He had also to inform the Council' that he had been able to form a Restaurateurs" Union of Employers. Mr. Long pointed out that might not include all those cited. Mr. Grosvenor said it did not. The list was then gone through, when, it was announced that 29 of those cited were not members of the Restaurateurs' Union. The Council then went into committee to see if an amicable award could be agreed upon. The statement of claim fixed the hours for male employees at not more than 60 per week, and for female, 52 hours, every employee to have two Sundays off per month. The minimum wages asked for weTe:— Kitchen "department.—Male or Female Workers. —Five or more hands': First hand, £4 10/; second hand, £2 15/; third hand, 30/; others, 27/6. Where four hands arc employed: First hand, £3 15/; second hand, £2 5/; third hand, 30/; others, 27/6. Where three hands are employed: First hand, £3 10/; second hand, £2 2/6; third hand, 30/. Where two hands a<re employed- First hand. £3; second hand, £2. Where one hand is employed, £2 5/. In establishments -where only one- hand is- employed, and such hand is a female, snch worker may he paid a minimum of 30/ weekly. Din-'ng-room workers.—Head waiter, £2 10/; others £1' 16/. Waitresses.—-Head waitress, 25/; others, 20/. Housemaids. —20/: Pantry Hands.—'Males, 30/; females, 25/. Porters.—"N"i<jht porters, 30/; dnv porters £1 5/. Laundresses; —£1 5/. Three meals per day shall be provided, two of which shall consist of hot meat and veg-eifables. Provided that in lieu of providing meals as aforesaid any employer maty allow to any one or all of his employees 10/ (ten shillings)- per week to each employee in addition to the above prescribed "weekly rates of pay.
