The Acting-Federal Treasurer now estimates the land tax return at £1,200,000. It was previously estimated at £1,000,000. The Swedish Consul-General at Sydney says that there are big possibilities for trade with Sweden in wool and frozea meat. On Monday 560,000 persons attended the White City, while 157,000 went to Kew, 150,000 to Hampstead Heath, and 61,116 to Earl's Court. In a test case, one of the members of the Capetown Typographical Society, who proclaimed a strike, was fined £30 and costs for breach of contract. An Ohio State legislator's confession of accepting a bribe is believed to forecast disclosures of wholesale Legislative graft. Several indictments are pending. The Sydney City Council has made a new departure in its loans, having obtained £50,000 from the City Amusements Company at the rate-of 2£ per cent. The Saltan of Turkey and his two sons, the Grand Vizier, and the Ministers for the Interior and Marine, have embarked on a battleship for -Salonika, several cruisers escorting. A stowaway from Singapore has been arrested in Manila, on suspicion of being Peter the Painter, who is wanted in connection with the Houndsdiich affair. The Consulate is investigating, Two persons m women's attire, but prpbably men in disguise, attempted to assassinate the Persian Regent, Nasr-el-Mulk, while the latter was out driving. No arrests have been made. The Federal land tax returns are already £1,126,000. A large number of assessments are to be made, and it is expected that the total will eventually exceed the estimate of a million by over £200,000. The Procurator-General of Monastir, Macedonia, was murdered by a Moslem fanatic. The Procurator had been instructed to -prosecute the proprietor of a newspaper which had been violently assailing the non-Turkish communities. The agricultural statistics for New South Wales show that 3,382,523 acres were cropped last year, being an increase of 202,000 over the previous year, but in most instances the crops were of a lower average. Horses, cattle, and pigs increased, but sheep show a slight decrease. Mr. Holman (Acting-Premier of New South Wales), in reply to a question in the Legislative Assembly regarding the congestion of cases in the Courts, suited that he had appointed Mr. Rich, K.C., as an acting-judge, arid would .introduce a short non-contentious bill to enable him .to appoint more permanent judge*.
