A NEW TERROR.
LEPROUS RATS IN MELBOURNE. TWO CASES FOUND. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. A rat, which was found in a. flying state in a demlling in a southern suburb" was found fIWRe infected with leprosy. This is the second leprous rodent found in the same district.
A DOUBTFUL STORY. Dr. Makgill, Public Health" Officer in Auckland, interviewed this morning in regard to the above cable, said it was the first case of the kind he : had heard of. Leprosy had never hitherto been known to affect animals of any kind; the only victims known to science were human beings. Until confirmatory evidence was forthcoming from the Government Bacteriologist in Melbourne, therefore, he would be inclined to regard the. information with some scepticism.
