HEROISM REWARDED.
GIFTS TO PLUCKY SAILORS. (Received 11.20 a.m.) VIENNA, December 4. The Emperor Frances Josef has bestowed upon Captain Matthews, of the Lowther Grange, which picked up the Austrian liner Trieste in the Indian Ocean six months ago, a gold watch, bearing the Imperial initials in diamonds; Captain Andrews, of the tug Deivan. a pair of binoculars, adorned with the Emperor's signature. The Lowther Grange's first officer and six seamen received monetary awards, and the widow of the engineer killed 10*,000 kronen. Admiral Slade and the Governor of Aden were specially thanked. The Austrian liner Trieste broke down in the Indian Ocean, the propeller shaft snapping on June 16th, when 600 miles from Aden. Sails were improvised out of awnings and she had covered 900 miles when the collier Lowther Grange sighted her and towed her to port, after six days heroic efforts. Terrible weather prevailed and the seconfl engineer of the Lowther Grange was drowned as a result lof the steel hawser attached to the Trieste snapping, while nine of the crew were injured. Near Bombay, the hawser broke again, and great trouble was experienced in getting the Trieste into port.
