THE COSTLEY BOYS' INSTITUTE.

{To tbe Editor.) Sir, —Will you kindly tell mc, through your "Answers to Correspondents," why the Costley Home for Boys was given up, and who receives the money paid for the building, etc., by the Anglican Church and friends of the Children's Home?—l am, etc., ENQUIRER. The trustees decided to close down the Costley Boys' Institute in Ttichmondroad because they experienced great difficulty in securing sui'tablejads to train in useful trades. The "bequest was originally left to the Kohimaraima Industrial School, and was therefore to some extent under the grip of the Government, ahd the trustees were restricted in their choice pby Government regulations to boys who had been committed by magistrates. The trustees decided, after-years of tests, that such lads were better fitted -for country'life than for training in trades in towns. Having decided to down, the trustees sold the institute building for Sister Cecil's Home for Orphans, and the whole of the purchase money having been paid, had ■been invested to allow it to accumulate pending further arrangements as to utilising it for the objects of the trust. Meanwhile, the income, or rather a portion of it, i 3 being utilised for the upkeep of lads recommended by the Education Department, to enable them to continue their schooling, and of course the pupils in the institute at the time it was closed had to be provided for until they reached the age of 21 years. Most of those have now been disposed of, and the future of the trust has been left in abeyance until the funds accumu- / late.—Ed.
