DECLINE IN FOODSTUFFS
IN THE UNITED STATES.
BIG CROPS AND STOCK SALES.
(Received 8.15 a.m.)
NEW YORK, November 16.
Bumper corn crops and heavy receipts of cattle and hogs in the stock yards have caused a decline in the price of foodstuffs throughout the United States, where the high cost of living was becoming a very serious matter. S J
Sugar, flour, pork, and. lamb share in the reductions.
The reasons given by economists in America for the increased cost of living are the world's increasing gold- production, the partial exhaustion of natural resources, the exactions of trusts, the protective tariff, the manipulation of speculators, the habitual extravagance of the community, and the demands of la.bour. The cost of the necessaries of life has gone up enormously during the past three years, and consumers have made several ineffective efforts by means of the boycott to bring down prices.
