SCHOOL MASTERS' DINNER.

The Poblic Schools Assistant Masters' Association, held their fifth animal dinner on Saturday evening in ihe Foresters' HaU, Newton. The president, Mr. D. Ihinlop, -was in the chair, and there weTe present many repTesentatives of the controlling and the teaching , staffs in the Auckland district. A number of suitable toasts afforded various speakers an opportunity to discuss various topics of interest to teachers. Mr. Campbell proposed "The Education Board." He was- of the opinion that the Board had proved themselves fair and reasonable in their dealings with teachers. The grading scheme—a self-denying ordinance, he called it—had deprived membeis of the Board of their cherished powers of.patronage, and they had shown that they were sincere in their desire to deal fairly by teachers in adopting it readily. Mr. D. B. Wallace, a member of the Education Board, responded. He assured the masters that the Board were always sincere in their endeavour to act in fairness to teachers in the service, and if they seemed at times to be unnecessarily severe, it was because their desire to be lenient had to be tempered to suit the grants allotted to carry on the v?ork of education. Other toasts honoured were "The Educational Institute," "The Headmasters," "Technical Education," and "The Visitors." During the evening a number of musical items were contributed by Messrs Rodgers, SawtelL, Kyan, Leth, Manning, Lambert, Hedland, Crawford, Allan, and Mr. Marriage's orchestra.
