Charles Brown, aged 11 years, whose parents reside at Autico-street, Melrose, Wellington, was admitted to the. hospital on Tuesday evening, suffering from severe injuries to his right hand, and after his admission to the institution it was found necessary to amputate portion of the thumb and three lingers of the right hand. According to the boy's story, the injuries were, caused by the explosion of a " thing " which he had obtained in the science class at school earlier in the day. Sergeant Mathieson, of the Newtown Police, on making inquiries at the school, was informed that the " thing " described by the injured boy was a harmless chemical substance, and a theory advanced by the teachers is that the lad may have been injured by the explosion of a cracker, bomb, or other piece of fireworks obtained from some of the other kds at the school.
