Defence in Thren Aspects: (a) Naval and ; Military; (b) Manufactures and Com- , mcrce; (c) Protection Against Aliens, j Last week "The People's Friend" pub- ( lished an article by Mr. Kelly, entitled ,j " The Blacksmith Poet," being a sketch j of his father's life, with samples of hU | j verses. He has written an article for tne " Westminster Review " on " What is the Matter with the Asiatic," It is in reply to an article on "Race Prejudice" which Appeared in the June number, and is in justification with the Colonial policy of exclusion. Mr. Kelly also has two short stories under offer to Casscll and Co. Miss Victoria yon Meyern, o'/ Auckland, who came to England about a month ajro, has been spending a delightful holiday with friends in the Isle of Wight. She is returning to London shortly, and will in all probability settle down permanently in the vicinity of the Metropolis. At present, however, her plans for the future are by no means definitely settled. Mr. Thomas Allen, of Auckland, arrived in England by the Orient liner Orsova, after a very pleasant voyage. Since his arrival here Mr. Allen has -spent some time in the South of England, visiting Torquay, Salisbirrv, the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Winchester. He is spending n few days in London, and then goes North to visit friends in Cheshire, and intends spending 'some time in Oxford and Cambridge and Leamington. The Misses Hellaby (3), of Auckland, are on a leasurable trip to the Old Country, and at present are visiting friends and relations in Scotland and the- Midlands. They arrived on June 25 by the Orient liner Orvieto, and spent the first three weeks in London. Mr. Arthur Hellaby, their brother, who accompanied them, is remaining in London to study electrical engineering. His sisters will make London their headquarters, and will visit the Continent later, but their future arrangements are rather indefinite at present. Mr. Hugh Christie, of Hikurangi, is making a trip round the world, partly for health and pleasure, but chiefly to visit relations in Antrim, Glasgow, and Connecticut, U.S.A. So far he has found the trip extremely pleasant and beneficial. He left the Orvieto at Marseilles, visited Lyons and Paris (where,he spent five days), and reached London on Juno 24, leaving again on July 5 for Port Rush, Ireland. After visiting other parts of Ireland and calling at Glasgow and Edinburgh, Mr. Christie will sail on July 30 by the Mauretania for New York, to visit New Haven, Hartford, and Boston. Among the end of August he will proceed to Vancouver, via Manitoba, and sail by the Zealandia on September f) for Queensland, reaching home about the middle o: October. Mr. F. H. Browne, of Auckland, who arrived here by the Athenic a week or owo back, is at present engaged in sight-, seeing in London. Later on he hopes to visit Scotland, Ireland, and Paris, and he may take a trip to Canada and back to this country. Beyond that his movements are at present uncertain. Lord Glasgow's son, the Hon. Alan Boyle, met with a serious accident on the last day of the Bournemouth Flying Meeting," which closed on Saturday. Mr. Boyle, who flies a Scottish built Avis monoplane, was competing for a long distance prize when his engine stopped suddenly. The monoplane dived down into a barley field and turned head over heels. Mr. Boyle was thrown clear of the wreck, but fell on his head and sus-. tamed concussion of the brain. At the hospital it was discovered thnt ha had sustained no internal injuric ■-. r A that his condition was not danger.". , .*. Mr. Boyle went to Brooklands somo months ago to learn to fly. He showed the greatest aptitude, and soon after lie had learned to steer his machine he essayed a brilliant cross-country flight. He flew at tbe recent Wolverbampton meeting. At Bournemouth engine troubles had prevented him from making any ambitious flight before Saturday, although lie had gained an award in the quick-start-ing contests.
