A little company of distinguished friends and well-wisb-er3 assembled on j the platform at Waterloo station on I Saturday morning to ibid farewell to Cap-: i tain R. F. Scott, commander of the iirit-, : ish Antarctic expedition, and 'his secretary, Mr. F. E. H. Drake, who left Eng- ! ! land 'by the s.s. Saxon for the Cape and j 1 Xew Zealand, en route for their long i and perilous journey Lo the South Pole. I Those who came to see them off iv- ' eluded Sir E. Shackleton, Admiral Sir j j Lewis Beaumont (one cf the vice-presi-! I dents of the Koyal Geographical Society), Dr. Scott Keltic (secretary of the Royal I Geographical Society), and Sir Edgar I Sp^yer. I Just before the train started, Mr 3. j Reginald Smith handed to Mrs. Scott a 'biiautiful bouquet of pink carnations. Sir E. Shackleton and Captain Scott spent some time in conversation on the plat- ' form, and almost the last words spoken j were toy the former, who, with a hearty •handshake, said "Uood-bve, and good luck." As the train was moving out of the station, Sir E. Shackleton led three cheers for Captain Scott, afterwards calling for cheers for Mrs. Scott. Mrs. Scott will proceed to New Zea-1 land with lier husband, so a3 to be with him until the Terra Nova sails from Port Lyttelton on November 15. Mrs. Evans, wife of Lieut. Evans, second in command, and Mns. Wilson, wife of Dr. E. A. Wilson, chief scientist of the stall', are also proceeding to New Zealand to see their husbands start. Mrs. Evans will probably remain in the Dominion until the return of the expedition, which, it is estimated, cannot be less than two years under the most favourable conditions. The voyagers expect to reach the ice in about a month after setting out from Lyttelton. The total number of the party on , iboard the Terra Nova, including the; officers and crew, will be fifty. With two j or three exceptions, they all joined the [ vessel in England, the members of the ' expedition being entertained by the Roj-al } Geographical Society nefore the depar- | turc of the vessel on June 1 from the i Thames. The exceptions were Mr. C. H. j Meares and Lieut. Bruce, who are in charge of the ponies and dogs, and Mr. C. B. Day, the motor engineer. The two \ former are at present in Vladivostock i engaged in making a careful selection of the animals to be employed. They will leave Kobe on August 0, and arrive at Lyttelton on September 7. Mr. Day will leave London on August 4 with the stores and sledges by the New Zealand Snipping Company's steamer Tongariro, arriving in New Zealand on September 20. j
