RUSSIAN DETECTIVE SHOT.

A secret police officer named MuratofC was, says a London "Telegraph" St. Petersburg special, on June 3rd, walking: unarmed, in one of the principal streets o£ Moscow, two or tliree days ago, •when he thought he recognised the mistress of a long-sought-for criminal named _ Shnra,ylen% alias Belussoff. The woman was accompanied by a man whom the detective rightly guessed to be Shuravlell, and whoni he promptly seized by the wrists with a view to arresting him. Shuravleff threw on! the ■detective and took to flight, drawing a revolver from his pocket and firing four shots at Muratoff, who ran after him. The detective was hit in the chest and .lower part of the body, and fell to the ground mortally wounded. He was carried to the nearest hospital, where he died in a few, minutes. In the meantime the pursuit was continued, and Shuravleff fired nearly a dozen shots at the police and others who were following Wni- None of them, however, took effect, although the uniforms of several policemen bore bullet marks. After dodging from street to street,' Shuravleff dashed dpwn a cul-de-sac abutting on a railway embankment. He fired at the guard on duty, bat missed him, and then a peasant youth, made a rush at him and caught him by the legs, bringing him to the ground. He was immediately arrested, ShuravlefC's record of crime is almost Incredible. He is known to have perpetrated at least ,seven murders, and to have been concerned in fifteen arnica robberies, twelve chiirch thefts, and 200 other ciimes, mo3t of which were committed in the vicinity of Moscow.
