A Portuguese cruiser, assisted by a gunboat, which fired on the Chinese durI ing their assault on Colowan Island, dislodged the Chinese from the island by i keeping up a heavy big gun fire upon it. The Chinese; in their endeavour to I escape, boarded two junks, which, when | crowded with men, were sunk by the ! warships, and all on board were drowned. I The incident arose out of rival Portuguese and Chinese claims to the Island. Recent negotiations with Pekin failed to -effect an agreement. | The Governor of Macao, the Portu- . guese port in China, has sent 200 infantry and several guns to Colowan. The Chinese Government foUowed this up by Bending a gunboat and 1200 soldiers to the vicinity, where they are stiU awaiting developments.
