•Leland S. Scott, a student at Stamford University, California, broke the world's record in the pole vault at the University of California's relay tournament at Berkeley on April 30th. Giving particulars of the feat, the American correspondent of the Sydney "Referee" says that Scott, cleared?«fche bar at 12 feet 10 3-10 inches, and the record -will unquestionably be accepted by tlie Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, as the officials wore all experts, Scotfc having expressed iiis intention of going after the record of 12ft. 9iin. made in 1903 3>y Walter B. Dray, of Yale University. Everything in connection -with, the vault -was strictly according to rule, and there is no question about the measurement, as the wooden standard's indication was borne out by the steel tape, which Was also used, to verify the Seobfc is a native of California, and his record. * breaking performance, while it ronsed intense enthusiasm, did not surprise those who had seen him in action earlier in the season, in a dual meet wita University of Southern California, Seobt cleared 12ft. 6in handily, and in the all-important meet of the collegiate season, in which Stanford competed against California, Scott won with a vault of 12ft. 6 l-Bin. He competed in the Pacific Coast inter-collegiate meet in which representatives from all the Universities -of the Pacific Coast took part and gained another record for himself, making *he highest vault ever recorded' in intercollegiate competition in the United States. He won the event with a leap of 12ft. 6 7-Sin., and then made three attempts to clear 13ft.
