CRICKET.
C. G : . Macartney, the Australian cricketer, has notified the secretary of the Otago Cricket Association that be does not purpose returning to lhmedin next season.
Says a Sydney -writer: Mr. SeweU'3 opinions on Australian cricket have become a joke to Australians, and, I daresay, to most Englishmen who know Australian cricket. "He is a South African, whose judgment in matters affecting Australian sport is valueless by reason of hia-over-reaching prejudice. The wonder is that English newspapers of repute in spurt publish euch views, offensive to sportsman in all countries, and ridiculious in the face of cricket history. The statements are not worthy of any other answer from this side of the world. It is officially announced that the Surrey Cricket Club has dispensed with tho services of Marshal, tile Australian professional. "One oi the most interesting figures in tho cricket field," is what "Wasden" says of Alan Marshal. After a distinguished cricket career in Australia, he left that country for England, where' he immediately jumped into prominence, scoring, in 1900, 4000 runs in dub cricket. On the strength of this performance he was selected for Surrey, and more than justified his appointment. Playing at the Oval in 1908, he astonished the crowds with his magnificent hitting which for sheer power had rarely .been equalled since the days of C. I. Thornton and Bonnor. Though famous (the insertion of iiis portrait in " Wisden " should justify the use of this word) chiefly for his batting, he is a, good bowler, and one of -the finest fieldsmen playing in firstclass cricket.
