MORE HOUSEBREAKING.
THEFT OF JEWELLERY AND MONEY
Another case of breaking and entering and theft is reported from Ponsonby. The residence to which the theft of theives devoted attention was in Cox's Bridge-road, the occupier being Mrs J. Cross, and the articles stolen were of jewellery, amounting in value to about £25, and also some £4 in money. The theft occurred on Tuesday last, when Mrs Cross, left her house to attend to business in town. When she returned in the evening she found that somebody had been in the house, and she at once sent for the police. When the house was searched it was found that several of the rooms showed traces of having been ransacked. It appeared as if the thief had first tried the "back door, and when he found that he could not easily get in that way, he broke a front window and climbed in. Probably the time of the visit was about 1 p.m., for a clock which had been knocked off a mantelpiece had stopped at five minutes to one.
