MUNICIPAL WORKS.

TENSERS ACCEPTED. At the City. Council last night, tie tenders were received as under for the supply of cast iron pipes for the Waitakerei waterworks: —Ohas. Judd,. sen*, £112; A. and T. Burt, £136; Masefield and Co., £130; Kelly Bros., £109; Massey £119; Beaney and Son, £97 15s lid; G. Fiaser and Son, £113. The tender of Beaney and Son was accepted. For the electric wiring in connection with the Town Hall tenders were received from the following:—Crosher and Son, £Sl7 5s Od; R. Y. Walls, £066; A. and X. Burt, £700; Turnbull, Jones and Co., £719; Grey T. George, £920. The lowest, that of Turnbull, Jones and Co., of ' £719, was accepted. The estimate of the electrical engineer was £800. . For th€ widening of portion of Highstreet and contingent, works, three tenders were received:—Coulson and.Co.. £1375 and, £1475; H-.S. Wilson, £1053 and.£loS3; Wooloy and McLean, £1271. The estimate. of the engineer was £1.180, if the retaining wall required were in brick, and £1230 in ferro-concrete. The tender of H. S. Wilson was accepted. At last meeting, tenders for the formation of pile and part foundation for the new electric power station were received from Coulson and Co., £ 9,3571 W. A. Robertson, £9,695; Jas. A. Moody, £9,834; J. Hewson and J. White, £10,----359; Rhodes and Tuck, £10,418; Rich, Roche and Jeffries, £11,652; D. Gouk and Sons, £12,218; J. T. Julian, £12,----300.

The electrical engineer reported having carefully reconsidered the tenders, and that after further consideration and a most careful revision of the quantities and prices, he strongly recommended that the Council should "itself carry out the -work. The specification contained a special clause reserving this right, and he was satisfied the work could be done within the amount of his estimate, and the work would be done exactly as wanted. Tenders would then have to be called for the materials required, which would all be in exact accordance with the specifications submitted. The Electric and Water Committee recommended that as the tenders were in excess of the Engineer's estimate of 58.950. and as tie Engineer -svas confident that he could, carrv out the work within the amount of the estimate, no tender Be accepted.'but that the work be carried out by the Council and that tenders be invited for the supply of the materials.

The electrical engineer _ (Mr. WyllieV. in explanation, said he had always been in the habit of -putting in his own foundations for machinery. It was very important work, and required the closest supervision.

The committee's recommendation was adopted.
