UNION OF LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETIES.
ATHENAEtBI CUP DEBATE. The first round of the Athenaeum cup debates took place last evening, the subject being "That Australia and New Zealand should co-operate and undertake the responsibility of their own defence." At University, University A and Y.MjCA. met, and the judge, Mr K. McVeagh, declared the former team tihe winners. University, represented byMessrs. Marshall, Wyman, and Ahjie, gained 223 points, While the Y-M.C.A. team —-Messrs. Leonard, Edmonds, and Greenslade, obtained a .total of 170.
At iMarist Bros., Pitt-street, the University B team —Messrs. Powell, Scott, ajid Jacabsen, succeeded in defeating the M.8.0.8. team—Messrs. McKenna, QarToll, and Nevin. The winning team obtained a total of 182 points, as against Marist Bros. 162. Dr. R, BriiTault acted as jndge.
At the Leys Institute, Ponspnby, represented Ijy Messrs. Bullen, Docwra, and Aldridge, defeated the 6fc. John's team— Messrs. Dowle, Metherell, and Scott. The points were: Ponsjonby 276, and St. John's 222.Professor H. S. Segar adjudicated.
