THE SILTING COMMISSION.

CONCLUSION OF THE EV IDENCE. After sitting for nearly three -weeks the Commissioners —- Messrs. Ferguson, Viekerman, Mitchelson and Flatman — .appointed by the Government to inquire into the question of the silting up of the Ohinemuti and Waihou Rivers have concluded the taking of evidence, and have now adjourned their report. According- to the of appointment, this report should be in by next Monday, but this is impossible, and an extension of time has been applied for. Voluminous , evidence has been taken, and, considering the number of witnesses examined, and the conflicting interests at issue, the Commissioners are to be complimented on the expeditious manner in which their task has been accomplished. The Government was most ( £orturiate in the personnel of the Commission. Mr. Ferguson made an ideal enainnan.. and to him is principally due the credit for the business-like manner in which "the sittings have been conducted. The Southern members are leaving Auckland to-morrow.
