THE CHIEF INSPECTORSHIP.

MR. E. K. MULGAN APPOINTED.

The discussion which opened a fortnight ago at the Education Board respecting the appointment of a chief inspector for the district, and which was carried on with something approaching warmth by the champions of the leading candidates, was continued this morning in a manner that savoured still of remembrances and a temperature. The Chairman (Mr. Parr) approached the subject by saying that he was sorry that any feeling had been shown the other day, and he wished to say for himself that he took the stand which he did in all good faith, thinking the situation warranted his attitude. The question was, however, an important one and all personal predilection should be sunk in dealing with it. Mr. Harris: Hear, hear. Mr. Parr: I am glad to hear Mr. Harris say, "Hear, hear." Mr. Harris was a bit rough on mc at the last meeting. Sir. Harris: You were just as rough yourself. Mr. Parr: Well, perhaps my manner was not like oil on the waters, but let us now approach the matter without any feeling and with a desirfi to discharge our most weighty responsibility in a proper spirit and sense of its importance.- I have no other object, and I am quite willing to believe, gentlemen, that you have no other object. Alter a considerable, amount of discussion on the merits and demerits of each of the leading candidates, the question of appointment <was put to the successive vote. The voting on Mr. Purdie was Messrs. Harris and McKenzie in favour, and the remainder of the Board against. The voting on Mr. GaTrard was MessTs. Greenslade, McKenzie, Farmer, and Harris in favour, and the Chairman and Messrs. Garland, Barriball and Edgecumbe against. The chairman decided against him on, his casting vote. Mr. D. A. Strachan, M.A., of Marlborough, was next proposed by Mr. McKenzie, and Messrs. Harris and. Farmer supported the proposal, which was lost.

The voting in the case of Mr. E. K. Mulgan, M.A., the last candidate left in, was the Chairman, and Messrs. Greenslade, Garland, Barriball and Edgecumbe for, arid Messrs. McKenzie, Harris and Fanner against;
