AMERICAN PRIMARIES.
BEFUBIiICAN DISMAY,
THE HAECWAY INJUNCTION.
NEW YORK, June 7.
Thß results of the primary elections for the Pennsylvania Congressional candidates have caused increased consternation and dismay among the Republican leaders.
The New York Senate has, by 40 votes to 24, made the Land Withdrawal Bill the next item of business. This is a great victory for President Taft.
President Taft has conferred with the various railroad presidents with regard to the question of increased freights, but the Government's policy is unlikely to be changed.
Mr. Chauncey Depew (chairman of the board of directors of the New York Central and other railway companies) says the railroads went about the matter in the wrong way. They ought, he says, to have sought a hearing before the Interstate Commerce Commission. The western railroad companies have a.grt»ed to withdraw all increases of rates, and have promised to await the operation of the new railroad law. President Taft has announced that the Government suit against the railroads will be withdrawn when the new rate law operates. (Received 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, June 7. Both eastern and western railway managers are satisfied with President Taft's proposal to withhold the increased rates until the inter-State Commission has inquired whether higher rates are justified. THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE. (Received 1.31 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 7. President Taft, in a message to Congress, recommended amendment of the Railroad Bill to provide for the immediate enforcement of a clause empowering the inter-State Commerce Commission to investigate and suspend "the increased rates filed by the railroads. The House referred the bill to a conference of the Committees of the House and Senate. BEAUREPAIRE IN FORM. BERLIN, June 7. The 400 metres international swimming championship was won by Beaurepaire, the Victorian swimmer, in 7m 9s, beating the German record by 465. Shiele was second.
The 100 metres championship of Charlottenburg was also won by Beaurepaire, who beat Beretting and Schiele.
