DELAYED BY FOG,

The TJnion Company's turbine steamer Maheno, which was due at Auckland from Sydney on Sunday last, did not put in an appearance at this port until an early hour this morning, and her protracted passage caused no little anxiety to friends of passengers, for the Maheno is a vessel that almost invariably can be relief upon to arrive on the Sunday. The explanation of the prolonged voyage is that the vessel met with thick weather ■throughout, which made observations impossible. The Maheno left Sydney at one p.m. on Wednesday last, and imEiediately ran into strong east to northeast winds and squalls. The weather ■was thick, and continued so all the way across the Tasman Sea, and '"sights" were out ef the question, the sun being invisible the whole time. There was little sea Tunning, and the Maheno made good propress up to Saturday evening last, when, as the vessel was within 20 miles or so of tlir Three Kings, and a dense fog set in. she was put about., and continued on an erratic course until the weather cleared on Monday morning, when it was found the vessel was somewhat to the south of Cape Maria Van Diomen The fog was accompanied by torrentiai rain and considerable water found its way into the deck cabins, while a driving spray made matters rather unpleasant on deck; but. nevertheless, passen<rers were enabled to indulge in deck «tmes and, on the whole, made the best "of the' Circumstances in which tliev were placed But the clearing the atmosphere was welcomed by all, and a fine weather trip down the coast helped to minimise any annoyance that may have been occasioned by the delay. The Maheno is announced to sail for Sydney to-night, but the p robabi ity is that she will not get away Until later.
