BUCKLAND.
Anniversary services in connection with the Methodist Sunday-school were conducted by the Rev. G. Bond, of St. John's, Ponsonby. on Sunday. Large congregations attended both services, and the singing by the children's choir, under the leadership of Mr G. C. Munns. was most enjoyable. The annual soiree took place in the Public HaH on Wednesday evening, and was largely attended. The superintendent. Mr Geo E. Spooner, presided. An excellent musical programme was gone through, prizes being given to the scholars for regular attendance. The ladies provided an excellent tea, and the function proved most enjoyable and successful. At the householders* meeting on Monday, the Bible in schools question was submitted, and lost by one vote. A motion that schoolmasters should not take an official part in. party politics shared a si_il.tr fate, but a motion declaring that the present system of sfree school books- was unsatisfactory, and that the Government should either extend the plan to njl the standards, or withdraw the whole affair, was carried unanimously.
