SPELLING IN SCHOOLS.
(To the Editor^ ~ T Sir, —I observed lately in your columns a letter from a parent inquiring whether reading and spelling were things of t the past. My little girl has learnt to read in a New Zealand school on the phonic system "in a year and a half. She is five and can read anything. Here is ,an en tirely unassisted specimen of her spelling: " —Tatid and ton, hocrw cis thfe madan all for Ion." (Translation for the old-fashioned parent: — "Poetry. tered and torn, who kissed the maiden ail forlorn." A MOTHER.
