KITCHENER'S TOUR.

— ' .• —- ■ ■ - DEFENCES OF LYTTELTON. (_B_USTC_IURCH, this day. Lord Kitchener this morning' visited Lyttelton, and was welcomed by the i Mayor and Councillors on arrival. He I then went on a tour of the harbour defences in the Harbour Board's tug, contenting himself on this occasion with observing the guns and electric' light station on the north side:of the harbour. He was taken ashore, however, to the Principal fort, Fort Jervois,' and there inspected - 150 men under XaeutenI ant-Colonel 'Cooper. He made a thorough inspection of the fort and armament. During the trip he made careful _ inquiries as to the soundings in | various parts of the harbour. <fflus afternoon he is reviewing -the cadets on the show grounds at Addington. '•' The adult volunteers go into cajnp to-night. Lord Kitchener's visit to Lyttelton was a veritable flying survey: The only'pause at the port was made to chat "with a Crimean veteran on the wharf. The field marshal had timed every stage of the tern-, and it was evident that one secret of his capacity for business was his habit of using eveyr minute, and __cer.___i_g exactly-how long each journey would ■take. He made no comments fo publication, but one brief remark of importance' is reported. He wanted to'know why the Lyttelton tunnel was not duplicated to prevent the blocking of ordinary traffic.
