HOSPITAL OR EDUCATION ENDOWMENT ?

DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. A deputation,, consisting of Mesere. C. J. Parr, G. J. Garland, J. H. MeKenzie, and A. Farmer, was introduced to the for Education (the Hon. G. Fowids) last evening by Mr. J. H. Greenslade, M.P., relative to the endowment at Dhe corner of Queen and Victoria streets, which the Hospital Board recently asked should be diverted from an endowment for educational purposes, and should be vested in the Hospital Board. Mr. C J. Parr said the Education Board desired to strongly protest against and such diversion a≤ that' suggested by the Hospital Board. The site in question had, from the time of the old provincial Government days, been, sec aside as an educational endowment. Somehow or other the Hospital Board got it as security for a 21 years' loan, on the understanding that it was to revert to the Education Board again at the end of that period. The Board felt that the Minister ■would preserve the site in the interests of education, and asked that it be definitely set aside as an endowment for technical and higher education purposes in this province. Auckland was not as well off in the matter of endowments for higher education as the Southern districts were, and as the site in question had in the old provincial days been ear-m-arked for education purposes, he asked that it be conserved a≤ such. The Hon. Mr. Fowlds promised to go thoroughly into the question, aad to note the Education Board's suggestions.
