REGATTA HANDICAPPING.

fro the Editor.) Sir, —I would like to know, through the medium of your paper, on What basis the regatta handieappers handicap the competing boats. The ketch Edna was allowed to start in the first-class traders' race, as the owners of Several secondclass traders objected to her sailing in that race On account of her being a different build—viz., a centre-board, rouudbilged ketch. Her carrying capacity is only one-fourth of the Moonah's, and she is exactly the same type of vessel; yet the Moonah is given 60min start from the Edna in about 40 miles in a strong breeze, the time occupied in sailing the course being 6 hours 49 minutes. The little vessel finished firßt, but with suoh a ridiculous handicap was entirely out of it. Now, if the Regatta Committee did not intend the Edna to race on fair terms with the other boats, would it not have been more honourable on their part to have refused her entry? Hoping to see fair-play in the future, as this sort of treatment disgusts every true sportsman, I am, etc, DISGUSTED.
