THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

NO MORE CHANGES.

The Hon. Dr. Findlay .Minister for Justice, interviewed by a " Star" representative this morning, in regard to the constitution of the Police Department, said the intention waa that Mr. Waldegrave should continue to occupy the position of Commissioner of Police, which he now fills. "Mr. Waldegrave is not going to act as a mere figurehead," said Dr. Findlay. "He has already started to get a complete grasp and control of the whole police administration, which I am sure will be highly to the benefit of the force and its efficiency. Later on, when he ha 3 got matters sufficiently in hand, a chief inspector for New Zealand will be appointed, and will be selected from the police force of New Zealand. The head office in Wellington has been changed entirely. It consisted of a sub-inspector, two sergeants and two constables. Those officers will he transferred to their proper positions in the police force, and the clerical work at the head office will in future be carried on by a clerical staff. Mr. C. Matthews, who was for many years connected with the Justice Department, has been appointed secretary, and the whole clerical staff of the head office will be changed."

Asked was there any truth in the statement that an English officer, with some years' experience in Bombay as chief of police, was to come out to join the New Zea'and force, the Minister for Justice replied that there was no truth, in the report.
