Between one and two o'clock on Saturday morning Constable Carmody, of Masterton, was aroused by one of Mr. G. W. Deller's sons and informed that a strange man was in their house. Accompanied •by young Mr. Deller, he searched the outhouses and garden, and after a while a man was bailed up in the corner of the lawn, concealed in some shrubbery. When arrested he was without his boats. He had entered the house, leaving his boots outside, and the room he went into was the girls' apartment. He had lighted a candle on the dressingtable, when the girls, who were naturally considerably alarmed, aroused the household; with the result that their brother came on the scene and the man fled, and the ■ police were communicated with. The man made a hurried departure, leaving his boots. When arrested by the police the man gave his name as John Walker. He was brought up berore Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, J.P., and remanded on bail in his own recognisance for £50, and one other of a similar sum. Bail was not forthcoming, and he was accordingly locked up. . The employees of Mr. O. E. Farrow, contractor, of this city, held their annual picnic last Saturday, a party of about a hundred journeying up the harbour, ■ where a most enjoyable day was spent. The programme consisted of races and the usual outdoor amusements, which were keenly participated in and thoroughly enjoyed. The party arrived back in Auckland about - 8.30 p.m., everyone having enjoyed a particularly pleasant outing. On the doorstep of his father's house at Mountsorrcl, near Leicester, Tom •Smith, aged 30, was found by his father frozen to death a few days before Christmas. He had walked from Loughborough, six miles away, during the night, and evidently being overcome by the bitter cold, sank down and died in the snow on ihe very threshold of home.
