ROYAL NEW ZEALAND TACTIT SQUADRON. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held an Interesting race on Saturday arternoon for the cup presented by Mr C. E. Horton. The weather was beautifully flue, with a nice breeze from about east-north-east 'blowing, emibliTHT the competing yachts to carry fulJ sail throughout the progress of the race. The Squadron had chartered the new ferry steamer I'upuke, and a large number of Lady and gentleman friends of those irrterostrd were on board of the steamer, which followed the race from start to finish. T"h«>re was an energetic cotnmittee, inider Mr C. P. Murdoch, to attend to the comfort of their patrons, to whom afternoon tea and refreshments were liberally d spensed. There wore eleven entrants, ali of whom came to the post, and th<» winner turned up in the Victory, owned by Messrs Jagger Bros. The following are the detail:;:— ENTRIES AND HANDICAPS. Raluliow, scratch; Rawcnc, f.ra; Thetis, 10m; Ilex, S£ni; Hartsease, SJin: KotlrL, Ngatira, 14}iu; Victory, lira.; Aorere, 15m; Waione, 13m; Thistle, 20m. COURSE. From oIT the end of Queen-strret wharf, round buoy off Brown's Island, round buoy ceur Rangitoto Beacon, finishing at the starting line. Distance, aboui 15 knots. very good start Victory having the best of It, but there was very little separating the competing boats. It was a dead beat down to the Brown's Island mark, against wind and tide. Rainbow and a number of the others worked the southern shore, whilst Thistle, Ngatira, and Heartsease took tlie northern n\de. It was not long before tho "crack" Rainbow was in the lead, which she imirntained throughout the race. It was a very interesting "go" between some of the boats, as may be imagined by the times given above. Balloon Jibs were noon set, after the. jnark was rounded for the journey down to the Rangitoto mark. Rainbow had increased the lead a good deal, whllert Ilex made up a bit of ground on the lead down channel. Ngatira w-jr unfortunate with her mainsail, which hart to be lowered for a time. For the run home spinnakers were soon in evidence, and tlie finishing timos were: Rainbow, Oh 5m 30s; ISawene, 5h l.">m ir>s; Victory, till l. r im 20s: Heartsease, 5h ISm 40s: Ilex, 5h 20m 17s: Waione, r>h 21m 10s: Kotlri. WAITBMATA DINGHY SAILING CLUB. The above clnb held an Interesting race on Saturday afternoon over the usual club course, the competing boats being sailed by youths under IS years. The entries and handicaps were: Ikatere, scratch; OlWeno. scratch; She, 10m. A fine even start was effected, the three boats getting away almost together. A fine race resulted In Ikatere reaching the finishing post first, Olivene second, and She last. On corrected times, Ikatere is first. She second, and Olivene third. PONSONBY CRUISING CLUB. The Ponsonby Cruising Club hold a cruising race on Siitnnlay, their destination being the Victoria Cruising Club's picnic at Orakei. The entries and handicaps were:— Alva, Glady, Ranee scratch. Mistletoe and Echo 2Jn, Foam 3m, Waratah 12m. The course was, starting from launch Kotlro, off St. Mary's Beach, thence- round luminous buoy in channel, finishing between yacht Cynisca and Orakei wharf. The finishing times were: Alva 3h 51m, Glady 3h 57m O.s, Mistletoe 4h 2m 235, and Foam 4h 3m 575. The handicaps do not afTect the result. Mr W. Harper acted as starter, and W. Wilson, Judge and timekeeper. Owing to the big launch race, the motor boat race, which should have taken place on Saturday, wae postponed until a date to be arranged.
