HOBSON STREET WORKS.

I • s '■> DEFERRED FOR SIX MONTHS. The Works Committee of the City Council, at last night's meeting, recommended that tenders be invited for the following work, recommended by the City Engineer, to be carried out in Hobsongtrret. This includes the excavating for and pitting down of a. foundation under the whole of the roadway in Hobson-street, 'between Customs-street West aud Karangahape-road, to cost '±:4500. The engineer was of opinion that the work could be better done by the Council's staff than by contractors, a.s old material might be used which would considerably reduce the estimate, nnd which a contractor would find it difficult to allow for in forming a tender. Some discussion followed a proposal that the recommendation of the Committee be given effect to. Mr. Nerfieny moved an amendment in favour of having the, work done by day labour, and contended that the Council would save a great deal by adopting his proposal. Mr. L. J. Bagnall seconded the amendment, which was carried. A further amendment was moved by Mr. Entrdcan: "That consideration of the work be deferred for six months." He contended so much money should not be spent in the maintenance of Hobsonstreet, when the money had really been borrowed for the formation, i The further amendment was carried.
