MECHANICS' BAY ROADS.

Result of the c^txrence. At last night's meeting of the Auckland City Council, the Works Committee reported upon the recent conference with representatives from the Auckland Haramur Board and the Parnell Borough Council, together with the District Engineer of Xew Zealand Railways, upon the proposals submitted by the District Engineer for the proposed new roads in Mechanics' Bay. The District Engineer outlined the Railway Department's proposals for closing Factory-road and substituting a new road along the base of the hill "from Alpha-road to King's Drive, „,.d a new road down the side of the hill from Manukau-road to King's Drive, and asked the Con noil's concurrence. The City Engineer reported that the proposals offered a reasonable and feasible solution of the difficulty re Mechanics' Bay-road and the western ex-tension of Manukauroad, and that the work should be proceeded with and not delayed indefinitely, as suggested by the Department. The Chairman (Hon. E. Mitchelson), Messrs. Hutchison. Keyes. and the secretary ot the Auckland Harbour Board; Councillors Joluis, Fitts, Thomas, and the engineer (Mr. Harrison), of the Parnell Borough Council were present. It was resolved that the road lines shown on the plan submitted be adopted, nnd that the eastern half "I" of the existing road be left open in the meantime, pending the expiry of the Harbour Board leases; also, that the Railway Department be asked to form the new road "C" and to erect ihe retaining wall. Mr. •!. M. Mennie said it was r.ecessary that the Council should sec that the city got fair play, and that there was adequate access to -the water frontage in this locality. A 00ft road, as proposed, was out of tha question. There would be no room for traffic at all, and he considered they should insist upon a road 100 ft wide. The committee's report was adopted. AVith regard to the boundary line between Auckland city and Parnell borough, and the offer of the latter Council to convey to the city land in Mechanics' Bay between the lines marked on a plan as "existing boundary" and "proposed boundary," the Work; Committee recommended that the. City Engineer furnish an estimate of the cost of forming both the high level and low level loads.
