"TWADDLE" ON DEPRESSION.

(To the Editor.) '< Sir, —'Your correspondent Mr. A. Sanford is a sea of knowledge. Xo matter what subject is before the public, he knows the why and wherefore of it, which is attributable to close study to some- ] thing that is not on his line, as the | concluding paragraph of his letter infers | that his logic is for others, but not I for himself. Sir. Sanford states that j "profits made by selling to others are j often not a sign of prosperity, but ! rather an indication that we are doing j a gamble." Mr. Sanford ia a retailer of i fruit and fish, the products of the land ! and sea, and it is with sorrow that I j am now forced to recognise that my i friend is gambling to give himself and his shareholders a return on their investments to acquire swell "residence sites," as most people like a domicile of Borne sort, even though they have to gamble with labour and the products of the world to acquire one. The temporary directors of Massey, Ltd. (very much), at the Helping Hand j Mission meeting blamed Sir Joseph for the London slump in mutton and lamb, i but Mr. Sanford says they have been gambling in land, not mutton and lamb; hence the depression, which I have not felt, as I had nothing to gamble with, though Mr. Sanford says that he is gambling in fruit and fish, which is not prosperity, but probably something better. Why does not my friend stop gambling and emulate Mr. Massey's work on the "never" system, and rely on a rally to pay his shareholders a dividend, • if his articles of association will permit of it; if not, they should be aTtered by the toilers of the briny.—l am, etc., TWADDLE.
