THE WEST COAST TRADE.

UNION COMPANY WITHDRAWS. According to advices from the South, the Union Company has decided to abandon its passenger servioe on the West Coast. The local office of the company is not advised that this is so. although intimation has been received to the effect that the Rotoiti, the only passenger vessel which the company has retained in the service since the running of the Main Trunk express, will be withdrawn for overhaul. The Rotoiti left Onehunga for the south this afternoon, and she will not be seen in the Manukau for some time, possibly never again. The company will continue to send its cargo boats to the Manukau, but so far as the passenger traffic is concerned, the Northern Company is given a monopoly. The latter company's steamer Rarawa is at present making two trips per week between Onehunga and New Plymouth, and the future of the service will depend on the amount of support accorded to the company.
