Waihi's gold duty -was discussed, when l deputation from the County Council isked that a portion might be diverted owards road construction at Waikino, ;he population of which was dependent ipon the Waihi Company's operations. Che Minister for Mines said he intended ,o_ go into this question oi gold duty at Waihi. It seemed to him that al*large •evenue was being spent in a small area, md was not of much' assistance to minnsr. The Minister of -Mines also expressed sympathy with the Paeroa. settlers in their attempt ■to get the river silting stopped, and expressed an opinion that it was really an act of vandalism that so much valuable land vas being destroyed.
