EAST COAST RAILWAY.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

THAMES, this day.

After receiving duptations re the deep level crosscut to-day, the Minister for Alines and Public Works spent the rest of the day visiting /Price's Foundry, .School of Mines, and Miners' Union sports. The importance of the construction of the East Coast Railway, via Waihi, was pressed upon the Minister of Public Works by the Thames Borough Council. The necessity for opening up a great extent of fertile country and economic railway construction was urged l>y a deputation. Mr. Taylor, M_P., claimed that geographically speaking Thames was the only workable port between Auckland and Napier. The Minister replied to the effect that the railway was not yet authorised, his duty now being to select the most desirable route. He thought Gisborne would disagree with Thames being the port for their produce. He would give the representations consideration when he had heard all the pros and cons further on.
