Dnbonr Day was observed here as a close j holiday. AH the s-bops were closed, and-the I ■Northern Coal Co.'s and. Hikurangi Coal Company's mines, and Messrs. Gibbons and Harris' "mill were idle throughout the day. A cricket match, Mines v. Town, was PlutckV in Mr. W. Carter's paddock, and resulted In a decisive win for tbe town. The scores were: Town W5 and 172. and Mines 20 and 38. Hatting, for tbe Town, A. Sterling 20 anfl Tfi, T. Jarman-14, G. I'urdy 10 and 38. E. ltickard 17. It. Rieknrd 15. W. •Murdoch 14. aud I>. Rust IS not out. obtained double figures: and for tbe Mines, G. Coutts 10 was the only batsman to reach double figures. Bowling for the Town, A. Sterling took 5 wickets and T. Jarman 5 in the first Innings, nnd in the second innimrs E. Rickanl secured 7, T. J.-irrnnn 2, and W. Mnrdoch, whilst for the Mines. G. Coutts captured .">. J. Blue .", and M. Wallace 2 in the first, and M. Wallace 3. J. Swinbanks 1. F. Eenilhnrilt 1. and J. Blue 5 in the second. During the interval tea and refreshments were kindly supplied -by Mrs. J. Main.
