Wintry weather prevailed during the week, and hall, sleet, and rain fell ou the day preceding the opening, w_en the sun shone brilliantly. The rain that had fallen favoured the appearance of lhe course, which uever louk.u better, and made the luwus aud surrouudiugs bright aud tresh. The sun tempted a large uiuuber of ladles, and many spring fashions made up a picturesque scene. The Governor-General (Lord Uudley) and party arrived long before the first race, ana ihis being His Excellency's rirst appearance at Cauliield, he expressed great pleasure at the surroundings. The New Zealund-bred horse Pluk-'un again Lomonstrated that he is equal to playing his part well by capturing the Caulfleid Stakes, which event was run over nine furlongs, under weight-fur-age conditions The Toorak Handicap claimed the Auckland gelding Soultline as a contestant, and the New Zealand division had the satisfaction of seeing the son of Soult lead his held home in the valuable handicap.
