" '-' "... ..'.__.■_ A. very pleasant ceremony took place on Friday evening at the Gas .Works office, Beaumont-street, when Mr. John C. Evans, of the staff, was-presented-by the employees of the Auckland Gas Company, Ltd., with a handsome sideboard on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr. James Lowe, engineer of the company, made the presentation on behalf of the employees, Mr. Evans suitably, responding. Mr. Samuel Wood., an old and highly respected resident of Auckland, passed) away at his residence, Epsom, yesterday, at the age of 72 years.. The deceased came over to New Zealand from Victoria, and for some twenty-five years was in the employ of Sargood, Son and Ewen, being subsequently manager of the hosiery department. He left the service of the firm only a few months back.
