KARANGAHAPE-ROAD.
(To the Editor.) | Sir,—With Mr. T. Prosser, I quite I agree that' it is high time the name of the above road should be changed, for reasons already stated iv letters to the Press. I well remember the first week after landing in i Auckland how tongue-tied I used Ito get when asking to be directed there, and how folk would brand mc as a new chum straight away. It, is not so very long ago since an old lady, with a very loud voice, amused everyone in I a Pitt-street car by asking the conductor to put her off at Kiang-a-rappy-road, ■ and I know an Irishman resident in Auckland at the present time, and for I the past 30 odd years, who persists in pronouncing it Krang-ape-road. Now, Sir, Broadway is a nice-sounding name,' I admit; but why borrow it from our American cousins ? There are thousands I of patriotic Britishers in Auckland, and I, as one, would suggest, if tlie name is to be altered eventually, "Empire-road," i and the bridge would be titled "Empire Bridge." In Johannesburg, six years ago, a substantial money prize was offered for competition over the whole of South Africa for a name with which to designate a certain new district which was about to be opened. I think we Aueklanders, "especially business people and those resident in the afflicted road, should give a prize to the one who is the means of getting our second leading thoroughfare's present name off the map of Auckland. 1 wonder what the worthy doctor, of Onehunga, thinks abont the matter.—l am, etc., HENRY WALKER. Park-road, West. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Yes, I am adverse to changing the good old name, having put in 40 odd years in close proximity to it. I say don't cliange it; others say do. Now, look. Our main street is Queen-street. , Ah! yes, we remember Good Queen VieI toria. We have fortune with us again in having a good King following her. ! Let our s_fcond street be plain "King"I street. If you shift back the shops 20 feet "Broadway" might fit it.—l am, etc, I FORGET NOT OLD TIMES.
