SHOP HOURS.

-To the Editor.) Sir, —Might I suggest to "One Inter-! ested" that there is one way, and one way only, to bring about the reform ho wishes a_ to the shortening of hours ? Let those whom the long hours press most h _a.rily on combine and form an association for their own protection. That is the only way to bring pressure to bear where it will have the best results. It hits always been a mystery to mc that in this so-called democratic country the hands who are given a holiday at the end of the week are robbed of it at the other end. A friend who once complained to mc about this matter got little sympathy from mc. "It serves you jolly well right," I replied, "and quite good enough for you."—l am, etc., ' ONE NOT INTERESTED. (To the Editor.) Sir, —I would suggest to "One Interested" and those shop assistants in drapery and grocery trades who desire to indulge in a little of nature's gifts to mankind, namely, a little sunlight and recreation, that they should join hands with those working for the same goal, and in unity stand together, and as the elections are drawing near, face the candidates and inform them of our demands. Attend the open-air wharf meetings, free platform, on Sunday afternoons, and I, for one, would be only too glad to start tho discussion and- solution on this important subject, and help to bring about' a working day of four hours, morning and afternoon shifts alternately, so that all mankind might enjoy the glorious beauty of this lovely world, which so many in their blindness are depriving themselves of. Why all for "gold and profit," which none of us can take into the next world. With too many shop assistants I am just a little wee bit afraid there is too much of the clothes and collar element and "I am a kick above the other fellah." However,, hope and work on towards the ideal.—l am, etc., j EDGAR E PARTINGTON. .
