A public meeting of citizens to consider the canal scheme was' held last night, the following resolutions being carried unanimously:—"That t'ais mee£ ing is of opinion that the construction of the ship canal between the sea and i Christchurcb is essential to the welfare lof the city and districts adjoining; that j this meeting affirms tiie principle tiiat it i s not advisable to spend a very large amount of f-apital on Lyttelton harbour until the question of constructing tha canal has been more fully considered; that an association be formed, to be called the Christchureh Canal League, to promote the construction of the Christchurch canal."
