20-KNOT STEAMERS PROPOSED. RENEWAL OF THE CONTRACT. Sir James Mills, the managing director of the Union SteaxnsMp Company, of 2sew Zealand, which operates the Cana-dian-Australian mail service, recently announced in New York that arrangements were almost completed for the renewal of the company's subsidy, which would allow of the operation of 20-knot steamships on the Transpacific route. The period of the subsidy renewal covers five years from the date of its expiry at the the end of August next year. "When Sir James Mills* arrived at Vancouver a few weeks ago, he announced that he was seeking the renewal of the subsidy upon terms which would allow oi the operation of 18-knot steamships, of which the Makura, now building 'in England, would be one. A special dispatch to the Canadian Press stated that Sir James Mills arrived in Montreal from Ottawa, on his way to London, and that he had stated the intentions of his company, now that the subsidy matter is satisfactorily arranged, to be the operation of 20-knot liners. This will not only provide an accelerated service from British Columbia to Sydney, but will form a big link in the "All-Red, route scheme.
