ARMY EXPENDITURE.
THE PROPOSED REDUCTIONS, A PRE-WAR STANDARD. LONDON, July 16. The "Daily Chronicle's" special correspondent, referring to "The Tim&s' " military correspondent's thinly disguised attacks on Mr. Lloyd-George (Chancellor of the Exchequer) and Mr. Winston Churchill (President of the Board of Trade), explains that the Government appointed a committee to bring the military expenditure nearer the figure that it reached before the Boer War, and emphasises that much waste was occasioned in the establishment of changes throughc.it the army. The correspondent further remarks that thero is no more loyal and peaceful part of the Empire than South Africa, yet it is garrisoned as if it were another Ireland. He advocates withdrawal of the army, which will effect a saving of £350,000 per annum.
