OLD AGE PENSIONS.
INCREASED EXPENDITURE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Old Age Pensions report presented this afternoon by the Premier states that the number of new pensions granted during the yean totalled 1,740. Deaths and cancellations were responsible for a deduction of 1,428; the actual increase during the year being 312. The total includes 657 Maoris, Payments for the year amounted to £325,199, which is £10,000 short of the amount appropriated by Parliament for the purpose. Disbursements exceeded the total of the previous year by £11,015. In Auckland district 33,147 payments were made, totalling £07.914, and 683 males, 668 females, and eleven natives drew pensions.
